Push back from potential leaders and volunteers Policies and procedures should be enforced, even if you 'know' the person. Exceptions can allow people to bypass the safeguards, allowing an incident to happen, as well as open the church to liability issues should an incident occur. If someone refuses to fill out the forms, comply with the procedures, or submit to a background check, they should not be allowed to work with children or youth. What if a staff person or volunteer suspects that abuse is occuring at home? That person is obligated to report it. In Texas, What should the background checks include? Where does the church find someone to do the background checks? Ask Karen Winship What if the background check shows something deemed inappropriate? The church always has the right to refuse the offered services of a volunteer or prospective staff person. What do we do with the inappropriate information? ????? How do we handle confidential materials? Forms, background check results, etc. should be stored in a locked, protected cabinet. What does the church without a building do with all this information?
Materials should be stored safely in a locked cabinet accessible only
by the person who is managing the materials. The pastor should have a
backup key. Cost of screening Some funding is needed to adequately screen potential staff and volunteers. Costs typically run between $5 and $50 depending on the depth of the check and the geography covered. Don't want to scare off volunteers???????? ??????????
