The Second Year

Conduct training for all new and returning volunteers and independent contractors

Conduct another facilities check to ensure open access

Gather volunteer information

All volunteers should provide updated information each year.  They should also be asked to sign the volunteer agreement.

Background checks need to be conducted only the first time a person volunteers.

Conduct a review of first year

The committee should review the incidents that have occurred in the first year as well as check in with the various ministry areas to see where there have been problems or near misses, not just incidents.  They should also identify any new or increased risk areas.  For example, if the youth are going on their first mission trip in the new year, the policy should be examined to make sure it covers that activity.

Make changes to policies and procedures

They should then make changes to the policy and procedures, as needed. These must be approved by the Task Force or Steering Committee.

Implement new policies/procedures and continue to enforce old policies/procedures

  • Make the changes to forms and other materials
  • Provide appropriate training and documentation to staff, volunteers, and contractors
  • Implement new follow-up/tracking procedures, if needed.
