Children's Education Outline
Childrens' CE Overview and Purpose
Childrens' programs are one of the most important areas of a new church, according to many new church planters. Parents must know that their children are well taken care of and that they are receiving a good start and continued support in their spiritual development. This frees the parents to continue their own spiritual growth and may allow them to serve others more easily.
Children's programs typically involve:
- Church school time during or between services
- Weekday activities including child care, school,or Mother's Day Out-type services
- Special programs including mission trips, service projects, or fun events
Expectations
- A safe environment
- A place to learn about God's love for them and to experience God's love through the love of childcare workers and volunteers
- A place to learn the stories of the Bible and their significance for instruction in life, and to develop a hunger for learning more about God
- A place to experience the joy of serving others
Scope
This topic includes programs for children from birth to fifth grade. 6th grade to 12th grade students are included in the Youth Guide topic. This topic does not include information about protecting children from abuse or ensuring they are checked into and out of classrooms correctly and safely. Information about those topics is included in the Child Protection topic.
Timing
Children's programs should be one of the first programs implemented at a new church, if the context of the community requires such programs. If there are any children at all in the families of the church, it is critically important to provide programs to care for and educate the children while the parents are involved in other church activities. Children's programs can be one way to reach out into the community well before worship services start.
