Evangelism: First And Second Years

Once the Pastor arrives, all of the preliminary work done by the Barnabas Ministry team can be put to good use.  It all begins with the Network.

"A networking church is developed primarily through cultivating a mindset, a collective attitude, and only secondarily through setting up programs."  Church Planter Manual, Redeemer Presbyterian Church

Using the network is an iterative process, and an organic one.  Use the network to generate people who will come (to whatever).  Begin discipling them. Invite them to join Small Groups.  Use the networked newcomers to bring others from their network of unchurched friends. This is the responsibility of the Community Facing members of the Launch Team (see What Positions Should Be Included On The Launch Team?).

  • Use the activities in Mercy Ministries, Outreach, [Servant Evangelism] and also [Worship] to engage those you are targeting.  Alpha Program can also be used as a point of entry for people into the new church.
  • Use the Small Groups as the primary pipeline.  Once you have several active small groups within your Launch Team, they should begin inviting their friends and other contacts from the database.  As a result, you should expect each small group to grow to the point of dividing into two, perhaps more than once a year, at least for the first year or two.

  • Stay focused on the "life needs" of those who have come as well as those in the community.  This simply means that all activities, from small groups to outreach and service should be "community facing" or relevant to those who the church is or will be serving.  Keep in mind that these "life needs" are not necessarily the needs of the sponsoring church or of the Barnabas Ministry team.  So be careful before lifting pre-existing materials from elsewhere.

"To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews; to those under the law I became as one under the law - though not being myself under the law - that I might win those under the law.  To those outside the law I became as one outside the law ... that I might win those outside the law.  To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak.  I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some."

1 Corinthians 9: 20 - 22
