Evangelism: Issues

See the subsequent topics (Outreach, Mercy Ministries, [Servant Evangelism], Church Visitor Guide and Alpha Program for specific issues.  General issues include the following:

  • Relationships.  Building relationships with the unchurched is essential to evangelism.  How prepared are you to make the investment needed to build them?  How prepared are you to invest in relationships with people who seem questionable to you?  It isn't so much an issue of money or programs as it is an issue of the personal investment each person is willing to make in another person.  Your Pastor and Launch Team members must be willing to make that investment.
  • Money.  How expensive is Evangelism?  How much should we be prepared to spend?  The most significant expenditures will be in the area of communications covering the Outreach activities of the church.  Eventually Worship will also require significant outlays.

What types of expenditures should we expect in the first and second years?  Certainly you will need a website, and you will need printed materials presenting your Mission Vision Values in a compelling way.  Don't scrimp on these items.  Some of your Outreach activities may require the purchase of videos, participant materials, etc.  The Alpha Program will be no different.  Don't scrimp on these items either.

Likewise, [Servant Evangelism] will require some expenditures but they need not be expensive.

  • Maintaining consistency (to values, theology, etc.).  Your new church will be like a melting pot.  People with all kinds of personal values and worldviews will want to visit and engage with you, with some wanting to become members.  Evangelism is your "front door" to the world (and especially to your target community).  There will be great pressure from those who would influence what your church stands for:  pressure to water it down to be 'all things to all people,' pressure to orient the church in a particular direction, toward one expression of belief vs another, even political pressures toward expressing 'conservative' or 'liberal' views.

It is important to maintain a Christ and scripture centered church focused on your target community.  Your values should reflect that.  Compromising your Mission Vision Values should be avoided.

  • Prayer.  Why is Prayer an issue?  Because it is too easy to simply give lip service to prayer or go through the motions without a deep commitment to prayer.  Evangelism is God's work.  We may plant and we may water but it is He who gives the growth.  So prayer will be essential to keep us directed and obedient to His leadership.
