Leadership: Environmental Factors

Environmental factors that will influence decisions in Leadership include the following:

Diversity of the Launch Team:  We generally think of racial/ethnic diversity but in a new church, other types of diversity might actually have more impact, including the following:

  • People from different denominational backgrounds mixed with people with no church history.
  • Wide range in ages.
  • Wide range in socio-economic classes.
  • Long time residents mixed with relative newcomers to the area.
  • People from defined sub-communities within the broader community.

The levels and extent of diversity in the community should be reflected in the makeup of the Launch Team.  In addition, churches in areas of high diversity should take extra care in planning the make up of small groups, community service projects, etc.  For example, a church following a cell model could become divisive if the cells are essentially different ethnic or socio-economic classes with no interaction between them.

Stability of the community:  A community in transition presents challenges to a Leadership team that a more static community does not.  A rapidly changing community suggests continued research into the changing dynamics, as well as frequent re-assessments of plans and activities to insure that the church continues to be relevant to changing needs.

External support:  External support from a Sponsoring Church and/or Barnabas Ministry can make the difference in reaching critical mass (around 200 in worship) before discouragement sets in.  Such outside support should be leveraged as much as possible.  In addition, opportunities to partner with another church, e.g. in community mission activities, can be beneficial to both.
