Leadership: Resources And Definitions

If you are new to church planting you will be surprised to discover the breadth and depth of resources available to you.  A bibliography of books, articles and websites (a good one is www.churchsmart.com) would be exhausting to complete and besides, more is being written every day.

In addition, specific groups of people are available to help you.  Those groups include your Presbytery New Church Development Committee, the Associate, New Church Development for PCUSA (Chuck Denison at cdenison@ctr.pcusa.org), your local Barnabas Ministry team, and your Sponsoring Church.  A local Presbyterian Cursillo Community http://www.cursillo.com/home.htm will also be a useful group with which to interact.

In addition, you may find consulting groups across the country who specialize in coaching new church plants.  New Church Initiatives, Inc., located in Houston, has assisted in developing this material and has a proven track record.  They can be reached at www.nciglobal.org.

The most important resource to the Launch Team is an intercessory prayer team.  Such a team should be recruited outside the Launch Team.  It should interact with the LaunchTeam sufficiently to understand the current issues the Launch Team is facing.

Such an intercessory prayer team need not be large or unwieldy.  Five members would be a healthy start.  But it should provide frequent and intensive intercession.  And its members should feel called to intercessory prayer.  It is not unusual for such a person to spend several hours per day in prayer.  So this role is clearly not for everyone.
